The European/International Joint PhD is open to applicants from both EU and non-EU countries, without limitation in terms of age and nationality. Applicants may also belong to Universities who are not part of the European/International Joint PhD network.
Applicants for the European/International Joint PhD must satisfy the entrance requirements for admission to the doctoral programme, considered the 3rd cycle within the European Higher Education and Research Area (model 3 + 2 + 3 which is parallel to the American pattern BA/MA/PhD).
In order to apply for admission to European/International Joint PhD in Social Representations and Communication, applicants must have the following academic qualifications by the deadline of 31 October on the year of the announcement. According to the country in which they obtained their degrees, they must have completed the level +2 in the European Higher Education System (or MA in the American pattern) or must have an equivalent academic title recognized by the European/International Joint PhD Scientific Board.
Applicants need to have a solid background in Social Sciences (especially in Social Psychology with interests in Communication Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, History etc.) documented on the basis of the transcript of records and any other documentation on previous training.
They must have demonstrable advanced knowledge of English, and preferably of another European language.
Applicants may be either:
- post-graduates wishing to follow the international curriculum of the European/International Joint PhD Programme, rather than the national system;
- doctoral students who are already engaged in a doctoral programme at their own university. This is possible for candidates from countries where enrolment in two doctorates at the same time is permitted and on the condition that, once accepted, the research trainee will satisfy all extra requirements of the European/International Joint PhD, including as international mobility, thesis supervision by three tutors, active participation in the International Summer Schools and Lab Meetings, etc. in accordance with the European/International Joint PhD E.C.T.S. training structure and on the condition that the thesis developed within the European/International Joint PhD programme is an original piece of research and not the same thesis developed within the national doctorate being pursued at the same time. In the latter case the European/International Joint PhD constitutes an additional qualification.
If the applicant is an employee of the Italian public administration, in case of admission to the European/International Joint PhD in S.R. & C. (without a fellowship) he is entitled to ask an extraordinary leave for the whole period of the doctorate (3 years). During that period, if the public employee does not benefit of a fellowship or of any kind of external funding, he will continue on receiving his wage and social security welfare allowances from the public administration for which he works; the latter will also continue on paying the social security welfare allowances and the retirement pension contributions for the public employee. This period of leave for study is taken into consideration for the public employee's career advancement.
Research Fellows with grant (i.e. "assegnisti" in the Italian academic system) can apply for the European/International Joint PhD in S.R. & C. and be admitted as additional candidates (the maximum number of additional candidates possible must be equal to 1/3 of the positions available in the call), if they pass the selection procedures. They must however clearly indicate their status of Research Fellows with grant ("assegnisti") in their candidature dossier. Obviously, in case of admittance the Research Fellows with grant must pay the annual tuition fees.
Applications may be presented preferably through the representatives of partner Universities, national tutors belonging to the European/International Joint PhD network, representative members of the So.Re.Com. THEmatic NETwork, or through tutors of doctoral programmes at the applicant's home university, if outside the European/International Joint PhD network. This will guarantee that applicants will be drawn from as wide a base as possible and not be recruited exclusively within the European/International Joint PhD multi-partner network.
